class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Red blood cells, also called <strong>erythrocytes<\/strong>, are specialized blood cells whose primary role is transporting oxygen from the lungs to tissues throughout the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their distinctive <strong>biconcave shape<\/strong> \u2014 thinner in the center and thicker around the edges \u2014 provides a large surface area for gas exchange and helps them remain flexible enough to pass through extremely narrow capillaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine our red blood cell has just traveled through the tissues of your leg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has delivered much of its oxygen to cells that need it for metabolism.
