Over time, plaque can narrow an artery and restrict blood flow. More dangerously, an unstable plaque can rupture and trigger the formation of a blood clot \u2014 potentially leading to a heart attack or stroke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So how does a healthy artery gradually develop atherosclerosis?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s follow the process from the plaque develops within the walls of arteries \u2014 the blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to tissues throughout the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-border-color involves the <strong>coronary arteries<\/strong>, it contributes to coronary artery disease. In arteries supplying the brain, it can contribute to stroke. surface of an artery is covered by a thin layer of cells called the <strong>endothelium<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A healthy endothelium helps regulate blood vessel tone, inflammation, blood clotting, and the movement of substances between the bloodstream and the artery wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several cardiovascular risk factors can interfere with normal endothelial function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>high blood pressure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>elevated levels of class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Low-density lipoprotein, or <strong>LDL<\/strong>, transports cholesterol through the bloodstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LDL itself has an important physiological role, but prolonged exposure to excessive concentrations of LDL and other atherogenic lipoproteins increases the likelihood that these particles will enter and become retained within the arterial wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once trapped beneath the endothelium, these particles can undergo chemical modifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cholesterol-storage problem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It is also a chronic inflammatory process.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Signals from the affected artery wall attract circulating immune cells, particularly monocytes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These cells move through the endothelium and enter the arterial wall, where is taken up by macrophages, forming foam cells that contribute to plaque development.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Macrophages act as cellular \u201cclean-up\u201d cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They begin taking up modified lipid particles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But when large amounts of cholesterol accumulate inside them, the macrophages become swollen with lipid droplets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These cholesterol-filled cells are known as <strong>foam earliest visible forms of atherosclerosis: the <strong>fatty streak<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fatty streaks can develop relatively early in life and do not necessarily produce symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this stage, blood may still flow through the artery without significant obstruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
